Scotland – November 2023

As the seasons shift and the calendar pages turn, the vibrant greens of Scotland’s grand vistas transform into a tapestry of fiery reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows. This is autumn in Scotland, a time when the weather plays a gentle symphony, and the landscape dresses in its most extravagant colors. I had the fortune of experiencing this seasonal spectacle on a weekend trip, where the weather, as if by some magic, cast away its infamous moodiness for a display of autumnal splendor.

My journey began in the heart of Edinburgh, beneath skies of the softest blue, dappled with swift-moving cotton-white clouds. The air was crisp, an invigorating breath of transition from the warm days of summer to the bracing chills of winter. Edinburgh, the city of festivals, was now host to a natural gala of colors. The cityscape, a harmonious blend of medieval charm and neoclassical elegance, was draped in the golden glow of the season. As I meandered through the cobbled streets of Old Town, the Castle, standing stoic on its rock, was flanked by trees dressed in brilliant yellows and oranges. It was a perfect day to enjoy the outdoors without the usual nip of Scottish wind—Edinburgh had never seemed so inviting. Ascending Arthur’s Seat, the city’s very own dormant volcano, offered a vantage point like no other. The climb, with the sun a golden disk in a clear azure sky, was brisk, and with each step, the view grew more spectacular. At the peak, the panorama was a riot of colors – the city’s historic architecture framed by the russet and gold of the season. The gentle weather, a rarity by Scottish standards, made the sojourn even more delightful, coaxing even the most reticent walkers to linger longer in the embrace of the autumn sun. Leaving the bustle of the city, my drive led me to the enigmatic Rosslyn Chapel, just a few miles south of Edinburgh. The Chapel, a 15th-century treasure trove of history and legend, was even more captivating with the splendor of autumn as its backdrop. The sun played peek-a-boo through the delicate foliage, casting intricate shadows that danced across the chapel’s ornate stone carvings. The air was serene and filled with the soft, sweet scent of decaying leaves—a reminder that there is beauty even in the farewell of seasons.

The real magic, however, unfolded on the road from Rosslyn to Aberdeen. The drive through Scotland’s heartlands is a visual treat at any time of year, but autumn brings with it an otherworldly charm. The route was a ribbon winding through a country ablaze with autumnal glory. Golds, ambers, and scarlets dominated the scenery, each turn revealing vistas that were a celebration of fall.

Fields dotted with bales of hay were framed by hedgerows heavy with berries, the reds and purples winking like jewels among the foliage. The occasional rain shower did nothing to dampen the spirit of the journey; instead, it enhanced the colors, leaving the world around me saturated with a richness that even the best cameras could scarcely capture.

As I drove, Lochs glistened like sheets of glass, mirroring the fiery hues above, while the gentle hills rolled away into the distance, their contours softened by the mists that clung to their sides. Every so often, the sun would burst through the clouds, the rays piercing the mist with ethereal beams, a reminder of the constant interplay between the elements in this dramatic landscape.

Upon reaching Aberdeen, the Granite City welcomed me with its stately architecture glittering in the soft evening light. The beach offered a tranquil respite with the sounds of waves gently breaking the shore, complementing the rustle of golden leaves. The city, in the throes of fall, was quieter, the usual tourist hustle replaced with a peaceful ambiance that allowed for reflection and admiration.

Venturing into the heart of Aberdeen, I discovered a gem that fused flavors from the East, Seoul Restaurant Korean BBQ & Japanese, a place where the food transcends mere nourishment to become an experience in itself. From the moment I stepped inside, the warm and inviting ambience of Seoul Restaurant enveloped me. The interior struck a delicate balance between modern chic and traditional Asian aesthetic—bamboo accents were tastefully juxtaposed with sleek, contemporary furniture. The service was impeccable from the outset. Attentive waitstaff, adorned in neat attire, were quick to recommend their favorites and guide through their extensive menu. Their knowledge and passion for the cuisine were as evident as the pride they took in their culture.

The main event, however, was the food. I opted to start with a soup, choosing Kkori-Gomtang (oxtail soup), which was a culinary performance in its own right. As all the tables with a Korean BBQ were already booked, I opted for the Sizzling Spicy Pork. Each bite of the perfectly grilled pork was a harmony of sweet, savory, and smoky notes, melting tenderly on the palate. Accompanying the dish were the classic banchan—small side dishes that offered a tapestry of textures and tastes. From the tangy, crisp kimchi to the incredible aroma of Oi-Sobagi and teh saltiness of Suk-Ju-Namul, every dish was a testament to the intricate symphony of Korean flavors. All of this topped with a delicious bottle of watermelon soju. The ambience added a final, cozy layer to the meal. The soft clinks of cutlery, the gentle hum of conversation, and the understated background music created a convivial dining atmosphere that was both relaxing and engaging. As the meal concluded and the last pieces of delectable sizzling pork, it was clear that Seoul Restaurant was more than just a place to eat. It was a cultural journey that delighted the senses with every morsel, an authentic experience of Korean and Japanese culinary traditions right in the heart of Aberdeen.

For anyone craving an Asian culinary adventure, Seoul Restaurant Korean BBQ & Japanese in Aberdeen is a must-visit destination. It’s not just about the food—it’s the perfect orchestration of excellent cuisine, great service, and an ambiance that transports you straight to the streets of Seoul and Tokyo.

With my soul comforted and my belly full, I took to the streets of Aberdeen on a short 6-minute walk to my previously booked accommodation.

Nestled in the heart of Aberdeen, my stay at the Lochnagar Guest House was nothing short of enchanting. From the moment I arrived, the stunning architecture of the house—a Victorian marvel with its gabled roofs and ornate stonework—promised a stay imbued with both charm and history.

The service at Lochnagar is where the heart truly feels the warmth. It’s run by individuals whose attention to detail is as finely tuned as the period features that grace the building. The beauty of the guest house extends far beyond its exterior. Inside, the architecture unfolds in a symphony of vintage aesthetics and modern comforts. High ceilings adorned with intricate cornices, and grand windows that bathed the rooms in natural light, paid homage to its historical roots. Each nook of the guest house whispered tales of the past, while offering the snug comforts and cleanliness that spoke of meticulous maintenance and thoughtful service.

My room was a cocoon of comfort, blending the old-world charm with contemporary amenities. It was clear that each piece of furniture had been chosen with an eye for both style and comfort, ensuring that the guest house’s heritage was complemented by a level of comfort expected by today’s traveler.

Beyond the tangible luxuries, it was the intangible that made my stay at Lochnagar truly special. The staff’s eagerness to go above and beyond, to ensure my time there was effortless, reflected a standard of service that was simply exemplary. Whether it was their readiness to offer insightful local tips or their promptness in addressing any requests, the service was imbued with a warmth that felt like coming home.

The route from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, via Rosslyn Chapel, was not just a travel itinerary but a passage through a living gallery of art crafted by nature’s deft hand.
